Recently, independent rapper Wax released his new album "The Cookout Chronicles" less than a year after his last album "Livin Foul". I've spent the last couple weeks listening to the album, and finally feel I'm in a position to give it an honest review.
For me, Wax has always been a rapper who's albums have a few good songs, and the rest are mediocre. He's known for his strange and at times comical lyrics, and also for his impressive rhyme schemes. At times, he also has produced really meaningful songs, such as "This Ones on Me" from Livin Foul.
His newest album doesn't fall too far from this standard. However, it has an interesting new spin on it. The instrumentals of this album are nearly all reggae fusion, a combination of reggae and hip-hop. Some of the songs even have elements of neo-soul music in them. This style gives the entire album a "chill vibe". Most of the music is very relaxing, ironically sounding like the soundtrack to a backyard cookout.
Overall, I'm fairly impressed with the album. There are always those lyrics he includes that make you wonder what he was on when he wrote them, and he sticks to his signature style of having strange skits as intro/outros in some of his songs. But, aside from that, I enjoyed most of the album. My personal favorites off the album are "Hometown" and "First Love", but "Inner Tube", "Love Will Make you do Dumb Sh*t", and "So High" are also worth a listen. The only songs I'm not a fan of are "A.O.", "Bulletproof", and "Spectrum".
This is the type of album that I would use as the base of a playlist of chill music. Could it stand on it's own, sure. But like I said earlier, the album has some good songs, and the rest aren't anything special. I may end up buying the album nonetheless, since the difference between the five songs I like and the whole album is just five dollars. I would recommend you check out this album if easy-going reggae hip-hop fusion is a niche of music your into.
